Wales

Around the year 1755 a man by the name of Levi Lambertson, along with his two brothers, sailed from their homeland of Wales to begin a new life in America.  As immigrants to the colonies, Levi and his brothers witnessed the American Revolution and the birth of a new nation.

Living for a while in Maryland, they eventually made their way westward.  Generations later their descendants settled in the western territory that became the State of Kansas.  There they farmed the land and raised their families.  One of those descendants, five times removed from Levi, was William Junior Lambertson.  I knew him well.  He was my grandfather.

The Lord allowed me the privilege to live and pastor for sixteen years in Kansas, not far from the farmland where my mother’s side of the family (the Lambertsons) once lived.  Now I have the privilege of traveling with my daughter, Tori, on a missions trip to Wales where it all began.

The older I get the more interested I am in learning about my family’s ancestry.  Obviously, I’m not the only one interested in the subject.  Somebody had to keep a record of all those “begat’s” that appear in the genealogies of the Bible.

In studying my family tree, I have found many Christians.  One was my great-great-grandfather Oscar James Lambertson.  Born in 1857, he and his wife came by covered wagon to Kansas.  I have in my library, books that belonged to O.J. Lambertson, as he was known.  He was a fan of D.L. Moody, and owned some of his books.  It’s hard to believe as I hold those books in my hands that they were purchased by my great-great-grandfather during the prime years of Moody’s ministry.

As I write this article I am reminded of Paul’s statement to the Romans, “I am a debtor” (Romans 1:14).  Like Timothy whose faith resided first in his grandmother, Lois, and his mother Eunice, I have a heritage of faith.  I am the product of generations of Lambertsons, Richardsons, Swaffords, and Westons.  Ordinary people with extraordinary faith in God.  I have been given a precious gift for which I am eternally grateful.  I will not mishandle the heritage I have been given, but will pass it down to future generations.

Maybe your family tree is not composed of believers in Jesus.  Do not bemoan the fact.  Remember that Abraham came from a family of pagan idolaters.  The heritage of faith in Abraham’s family started with him, and it continues to this day!  If you do not have a Christian heritage, then you have the privilege of being the patriarch or matriarch of faith for your family.  The heritage of faith will start with you.

By the time you read this article I will be in Wales.  Who knows?  I may stumble across a Lambertson!

welcome home to family

In Luke’s record of the Early Church we learn in Acts 2 that the three-thousand converts who were saved on the Day of Pentecost “devoted themselves to the apostles’ teaching, and to fellowship, and to sharing in meals (including the Lord’s Supper), and to prayer” (Acts 2:42)  So close did the members of the Early Church become that Paul referred to the body of believers as “the household of faith” (Galatians 6:10).  The idea is that the Church is like a family.  As a matter of fact, the Church is a family.  It’s the family of God (Ephesians 2:19).

While salvation is a personal experience, the Christian life is something we do together.  I was saved alone, but I don’t stay alone.  At salvation I am born into the household of God.  Rather than going it alone, it is God’s will that I become part of a local church family.

Did you know that there are many animals that live alone?  They are called solitary animals.  The list is numerous and includes such animals as tigers, bears, foxes, and Tasmanian devils.  Who in their right mind would want to live with a Tasmanian devil?  Search the list of solitary animals and you will not find sheep among them.  Psalm 100:3 says, “We are His people and the sheep of His pasture.”  Like sheep, God designed us to live with the flock.

There are a lot of lonely people in the world looking for a place for belong.  For that matter, there are a lot of lonely people in Southwest Florida.  I talked to a brother in Christ today who confessed he could not name one Christian friend.  Not one.  How sad.

I have a radical idea.  Let’s recommit to our local church family known as RLA.  Then let’s start inviting others from our community to church.  Let’s invite them to meet the Savior we all know and love, and to become part of the household of faith.  This means we do not approach church with a consumer point of view (what’s in it for me), but from a missional point of view (what’s in it for others).  May God help us to all start thinking like a missionary.

The Church of Jesus Christ is the household of faith.  To all who walk through the doors of RLA and unite with us in Christ we say — welcome home to family!

What's The Point?

It has been said there are three great questions of life:

  • How did I get here?
  • Why am I here?
  • Where am I going?

The goal of human philosophy is to answer those questions while leaving God out of the equation.  Our English word philosophy comes from the Greek philosophia which is a compound word: phileo (to love), and sophia (wisdom).  Philosophy is the love of wisdom; namely, human wisdom.

Of this Paul issued a warning, “See to it that no one takes you captive through hollow and deceptive philosophy, which depends on human tradition and the elemental spiritual forces of this world rather than on Christ” (Colossians 2:8).

In this passage Paul pointed out four errors of philosophy.  First, it is hollow and deceptive.  Philosophy promises truth, but delivers lies.  Second, it depends on human traditions.  Philosophy is not established on the eternal truths of God’s Word, but on faulty human reasoning.

Third, it is according to the elemental spiritual forces of this world.  The Greek word translated “elemental” speaks of things in a row, or things in a column like ABC/123.  It refers to the basic teaching a child would receive.  To abandon biblical revelation for human speculation is foolish.  And fourth, it is not according to Christ.  Human philosophy has nothing to do with Jesus.

As one person observed, “Philosophy is like a blind man looking in a dark room for a black cat that isn’t there.”  Human philosophy is about as helpful as a trap door in a canoe.  To attempt to answer the great questions of life without God is an exercise in futility.

God Himself is the creator of life (Genesis 2:7).  He is our life (Acts 17:28).  The meaning and purpose of life are found in Him (John 17:3).  And He is the final goal and destination of life (Revelation 21:7).  Life is all about God!

I like the way Billy Graham stated it, “Life without God is like an unsharpened pencil - it has no point!”  Attempting to explain or live life without God is, in the words of Solomon, vanity.  It’s like trying to grasp the wind.  It cannot be done.

The great questions of life can only be answered by God Himself.  So the next time you or someone you know are looking for answers, turn to God’s Word.  Unlike philosophy, the Bible will always tell you the truth.  As the writer testified, “All your words are true; all your righteous laws are eternal” (Psalm 119:160).

A Place To Grow

8/7/2017

Most of us can remember being asked this question when we were kids, “What do you want to be when you grow up?”  With the possible exception of Peter Pan, every kid wants to grow up.  One of the chief occupations of childhood is growing up.

Jesus was no exception to this.  According to Luke 2:52, “Jesus grew in wisdom and stature, and in favor with God and man.”  In that verse we see the four dimensions of growth:

   1.  Intellectual Growth — Jesus grew in wisdom
   2.  Physical Growth — Jesus grew in stature
   3.  Spiritual Growth — Jesus grew in favor with God
   4.  Social Growth — Jesus great in favor with man

While physical growth is automatic, the other three areas require intentional effort.

Among the many things the Bible tells us about the Church of Jesus Christ is that the Church is a place to grow.  Being an active part of a local body of believers can greatly contribute to a person’s growth intellectually through the study of God’s Word, spiritually through the ministries of the church, and socially by becoming part of the church family.

We would all agree that it would be a real tragedy for a child to advance through the years without experiencing growth and maturity.  Equally tragic (if not more so) is when a Child of God fails to grow.

Paul regretted that he could not speak to the Corinthian believers at a spiritually mature level because they were still infants in Christ (1 Cor. 3:1).  Later, the Hebrew writer informed his Jewish audience they were behind in their spiritual growth (Hebrews 5:12).  Rather than moving on to deeper subjects, they needed to re-learn their spiritual ABC’s.

In 1 Cor. 13:11 Paul said there comes a time when you must move on from childhood to adulthood.  Likewise, in the Christian life it is God’s will that we grow up.  Growth is a sign of health and life.  As long as you live, never stop growing.

River of Life Assembly (RLA) is a place to grow.  Don’t be a non-growing Christian who merely exists on the margins of church life.  Commit to growth by connecting to your church and church family.  Come on and grow with us!
