I opened my Bible today to Isaiah. In the layout of this particular Bible, two well known verses appear almost side-by-side on the same page; one in the left column, the other in the right.
The verse in the left column is Isaiah 54:17, “No weapon forged against you will prevail, and you will refute every tongue that accuses you. This is the heritage of the servants of the Lord, and this is their vindication from me, declares the Lord.”
The verse just to the right is Isaiah 55:11, ”So is my word that goes out from my mouth: it will not return to me empty, but will accomplish what I desire and achieve the purpose for which I sent it.”
Combining these verses gives a strong double-promise for believers: SATAN’S WEAPONS WILL NOT PREVAIL; GOD’S WORD CANNOT FAIL!
When it comes to Satan, the temptation is to either ignore him or be intimidated by him. While Satan is real and his weapons are powerful, they are not all-powerful. Jesus proved three times over in the wilderness temptations that Satan is no match for God’s Word. Satan cannot resist the Word of God because it proceeds from the mouth of the Omnipotent One!
A case in point is the story of Balaam, the Old Testament psychic believed to have magical powers. Balaam was hired to put a curse on the nation of Israel. But no matter how hard Balaam tried to curse the people, it wouldn’t work. He finally explained to the pagan king who hired him, “There is no divination against Jacob, no evil omens against Israel” (Numbers 23:23) The attempt to curse Israel did not prevail because God said they would be blessed, and Balaam could not reverse it (Numbers 23:20).
The same holds true for believers today. Satan cannot cancel out a single declaration or promise of God. The enemy has many weapons at his disposal, but the Sword of the Spirit is greater than all of them (Ephesians 6:17; Hebrews 4:12; 2 Corinthians 10:4-5). For the believer armed with the Word, Satan’s attacks will fall to the ground alongside Balaam’s impotent curses.
We are living in times of intense spiritual conflict. Spiritual warfare has always been around, but in recent days it has moved out into the open. Do not be intimidated by it! Instead, get serious about the Bible. Memorize it. Pray it. Stand on it. Speak it with boldness and authority. Having armed yourself with the whole armor of God (Ephesians 6:11-18), take up the mighty Sword of the Spirit and put the enemy on the run.
